Pachmarhi, the only hill station of Madhya Pradesh, is a charming town nestled in the heart of the Satpura ranges. Much of its land falls under the Pachmarhi Cantonment, established in 1872 during the British era. The civilian part of the town is comparatively small, located near the lake, and primarily thrives on tourism.
Unlike modern tourist destinations with malls and large luxury hotels, Pachmarhi has retained its simplicity and old-world charm. Most hotels are small, family-run establishments offering around 15–30 rooms, and many of them serve only vegetarian meals. Local shops cater to visitors with souvenirs such as marble crafts, jute products, wooden items, and small handicrafts, while also serving the families of Army personnel posted in the cantonment.
When the scorching heat waves make life unbearable in the plains, Pachmarhi provides a soothing escape with its cool breeze and serene climate. During the monsoon season, the hill station transforms into a lush paradise, often compared to a newlywed bride draped in greenery and mist. Tourists staying in cottages often find themselves surrounded by floating clouds, with birdsong creating a magical symphony in the background.
For adventure lovers, Pachmarhi offers a variety of thrilling experiences such as paragliding, trekking, and cycling tours through dense forests and hilly terrains. Its peaceful landscapes and untouched charm make it a paradise for both leisure seekers and adrenaline enthusiasts.
Unlike Kashmir, Shimla, or Mussoorie, Pachmarhi is not widely known on the national tourism map. Due to its lack of railway connectivity and distance from major metro cities, the town has remained relatively untouched, preserving its natural beauty. It continues to be a hidden treasure of Madhya Pradesh, famous primarily among state tourists and nature lovers seeking tranquility.
Pachmarhi gained prominence when eminent Indian leaders like Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Ram Manohar Lohia, and Jai Prakash Narayan visited this serene destination, further adding to its cultural and historical value.
