    Sonagiri, meaning “Golden Peak”, is home to more than a hundred Jain temples, both small and large, scattered across the hills and plains of the region. These temples are not only sacred sites for worship but also reflect the devotion and craftsmanship of earlier centuries.

    Every year, thousands of Jain monks, devotees, and tourists visit Sonagiri to pay homage and seek spiritual enlightenment. The site holds immense religious importance in Jainism, as it is believed that many saints attained moksha (liberation) here. The temples, surrounded by serene natural beauty, create a tranquil environment for meditation, prayer, and inner peace.

    Among the many temples, the most prominent is Temple No. 57, located on the hill, which is a key pilgrimage site for followers. From the hilltop, visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, adding to the town’s charm as both a religious and tourist destination.

    Sonagiri is located about 15 kilometers from Datia and is well-connected by road and rail, making it easily accessible for pilgrims and travelers alike. General Information of Sonagiri

  • This sacred place is popular among devotees & ascetic saints to practice for self-discipline, austerity and to attain Nirvana (Salvation) since the time of Bhagwan Chandraprabhu (The 8th Teerthankar), Five & half Crores of ascetic saints have achived salvation (Moksha or Nirvana) from here.
  • The Samavsharan of Bhagwan Chandraprabhu came here for 17 times. Nang, Anang, Chintagati, Poornachand, Ashoksen, Shridatta, Swarnbhadra and many other saints achieved salvation from here.
  • This is the unique place known as Laghu Sammed Shikhar covering the area of 132 acres of two hills. There are 77 beautiful Jain temples with sky high spires, Temple No. 57 is main among them.

  • Acharya Shubh Chandra & Bhartrihari lived and worked here for spiritual achievements. They completed here some texts also.
  • Gopachal Atishaya Kshetra famous for high colossus of Lord Adinath and others the wonderful creation by artists, a must for devotees to see.
  • Chanderi, Papouraji, Thuvonji, Devgarh and many sacred places are here in nearby area.

 

Places of Interest

Main Temple & Idol

  • Temple No. 57 on hill is the main temple. This is vast in size, very beautiful, having 
    Attractive artistic spire, in this temple principal deity are Lord Chandraprabhu, 
  • 11 feet in height and two other beautiful idols of Lord Sheetalnath & Parsvanath are installed. There is a column of dignity (Manstambh) near temple 43 feet in height and an attractive model of Samavsharan, big in size is also here.

Other Temples

  • Other more than 77 temples on hill, there are 26 temples in the village; most of them are old enough.
  • At Kund-Kund Nagar, on 25 feet high plate form, a colossus of Lord Bahubali in standing posture 18 feet in height has been installed, below it a hall is built to practice the meditation.
  • Attractive models of Sammedshikar, Girnar, Champapur and Pavapur are constructed here. 
  • These are the places of salvation (Nirvana Kshetra) of 24 Teerthankars, images are pleasing to eyes.

Top excursions in Sonagiri

  • Sonagir or Sonagiri that literally means ‘golden hill’ is a hill dotted with white Jain temples about 15 kms from Datia town and attracts attention from quite a distance. 
  • It is a sacred place for Digambar Jain sect and is associated with the 8th Tirthankar Chandraprabha. 
  • There are 77 temples dedicated to the various Tirthankars and many of them belong to 9th -10th century.
  • A majority of the Jain holy places are located in the hills and they are oasis of absolute peace & tranquility. Sonagiri is no different.

  • A climb up the hill last evening was an exhilarating experience. 
  • There is an ancient temple at the base which has a collection of some priceless statues made in Sphatik & jade. 
  • The glass inlay work in the sanctum is amazing and has earned this temple the name ‘Kanchka Mandir’.
