About Gwalior

The 'pearl among fortresses' on Madhya Pradesh's north edge

Gwalior, the gateway city of Madhya Pradesh, is dominated by the towering Gwalior Fort — described by Mughal Emperor Babur as 'the pearl amongst fortresses of Hind.' Built on a 3-km long sandstone hill, the fort has been ruled by Tomars, Mughals, Marathas, the British and finally the Scindias.

Beyond the fort, Gwalior is a city of music and palaces — birthplace of Mian Tansen, home of the Gwalior gharana of Hindustani classical music, and seat of the magnificent Jai Vilas Palace with its 3,500-kg crystal chandeliers.
