About Khajuraho

The Chandela dynasty's sculpted hymn to life

Khajuraho is a small town in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district, world-famous for its UNESCO-listed group of medieval temples built between 950 and 1050 CE by the Chandela dynasty. Of the original 85 temples only 25 survive — and they are among the finest expressions of Indian temple architecture.

The temples are celebrated for their intricately carved sculptures, depicting gods, dance, music, war, daily life and meditation. The annual Khajuraho Dance Festival in February turns the temple complex into one of India's most beautiful open-air stages.
