Bhopal's largest and oldest lake, known locally as Bhojtal or Bada Talab.

Bhopal is widely known as the city of lakes, and Upper Lake is the most significant of them. It is commonly called the Bhojtal, and locals also know it as Bada Talab. It lies on the west side of the city.
Upper Lake is the oldest human-made lake in the country. It is not only a landmark but a working part of the city: serving around 30 million gallons of water, it is a primary source of potable water for Bhopal's residents.
Upper Lake is the largest of Bhopal's lakes and the one the city is most identified with. Its shoreline sits on the western edge of the built-up area. Walking or driving along it gives the clearest sense of its scale.
The same water carries more than one name. Bhojtal is the formal one you will see on signs and maps, while Bada Talab is what you will hear from residents. Knowing both helps when asking directions.
Upper Lake is on the western side of Bhopal, so it fits naturally into a half day spent on that side of the city.
The lake can be seen at any time of year. Early morning and late afternoon are the easier parts of the day for walking along the shore, and give the most comfortable light over the water.
