About Maheshwar

Where Rani Ahilyabai turned a town into a living temple

Maheshwar sits on the north bank of the holy Narmada River in Khargone district. Once the capital of the Holkar dynasty under the legendary Rani Ahilyabai (1767–1795), it remains one of central India's most graceful riverside towns.

Lined with carved sandstone ghats, hilltop forts and dozens of small temples, Maheshwar is also home to the famous Maheshwari sarees — a 250-year-old handloom tradition that Ahilyabai personally founded with master weavers from Surat.
