River in Omkareshwar

  • Omkareshwar is situated in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh State in India. It is about 20 kms from Mortakka in Madhya Pradesh.
  • Omkareshwar is formed by the sacred river Narmada. This is one of the most sacred rivers of India.
  • Omkareshwar is a Hindu temple dedicated to God Shiva. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva.
  • It is on an island called Mandhata or Shivapuri in the Narmada river.
  • Omkareshwar and Amareshwar are situated on either side of the river Narmada. 
  • But as per the sloka on dwadashjyotirligam, Mamleshwar is the jyotirling. 
  • Both are connected by a bridge on the river Narmada. Boats are available to cross the river. 
  • Pilgrams take a holy dip in the river, before they proceed to visit the temple. Abhisekhams are done at both the temples.
