About the Jama Masjid

The foundation of the Jama Masjid was laid in 1251 AD to commemorate the capture of Chanderi by the Delhi Sultanate, in a campaign commanded by Ghiassuddin Balban, which defeated the Pratihara Maharaja Chanha Deva. Three huge domes rise above the halls and give the building a commanding presence over the town below. It is the largest mosque in Chanderi, with capacity for 3,400 people, and is particularly known for Friday prayers. The Archaeological Survey of India is currently carrying out conservation work here, and the mosque is open to tourists between 10 AM and 5 PM.

Inside the mosque

The three domes

The three large domes over the halls are what make the mosque visible from across Chanderi. They are best appreciated from outside at a distance and then from within the halls they cover, where their scale becomes clear.

The prayer halls

The halls are built to hold 3,400 people, which makes this by a wide margin the largest mosque in the town. Friday is the main congregational day and the halls fill accordingly, so visitors should plan around it.

Planning your visit

This is a working mosque as well as an ASI-conserved monument, so visiting hours and prayer times both matter.

  • Visitor hours are 10 AM to 5 PM.
  • Avoid Friday midday, when the mosque is busiest with congregational prayer.
  • Dress modestly and remove footwear where required.
  • The Badal Mahal Gate faces the mosque and is a two minute walk away.

Best time to visit

Visiting hours run from 10 AM to 5 PM, so late morning or mid afternoon works well, with the cooler months from October to March most comfortable. Any day except Friday midday will be quieter for looking at the building itself.
