About Kalinjar Fort

Kalinjar is an ancient fort in Banda district of Uttar Pradesh, and reaching it means a journey out of Chitrakoot rather than a stop within the town. One of the eight famous forts built by the Chandela kings, it stands on the Vindhya range near Khajuraho and rises to 1203 feet, overlooking the Bundelkhand plains. The name is said to come from Kalanjar, a reference to Shiva, who is held to have rested at this spot and destroyed the time barrier, and the belief is that Shiva is always present here. Stone images of Shiva, Vishnu, Shakti, Bhairava, Ganesh and Bhairavi are found at the fort, alongside stone carvings of birds, mithuna, apsaras and animals. The place suits travellers who like working their way through architectural ruins rather than visiting a maintained monument.

Across the fort

Sita Sej

A small cave with a stone bed and pillow, once used by hermits. It is one of the more memorable things at Kalinjar precisely because it is so plain.

The Gajantak Shiva image

Also known as Manduk Bhairon, this image of Shiva is carved into the surface of the rock rather than set up as a free standing sculpture, which is how most of the figure work at Kalinjar survives.

Koti Tirth

A vast water reservoir within the fort, and the clearest sign of how a hill fortress of this size held out. It is also the most photographed spot on the site.

Neelkanth Temple

Constructed by Parmardideva, this is the holiest shrine at Kalinjar. The approach to it carries inscriptions and carved images of Shiva, Ganesha, Hanuman and Kala Bhairon, and is worth walking slowly.

Planning your visit

This is a full day excursion out of Chitrakoot into Banda district, and a hill fort with a lot of ground to cover once you arrive. Plan the whole day for it.

  • Leave early with a vehicle and a driver who knows the route into Banda district.
  • Expect substantial walking and climbing on uneven stone.
  • Carry water and food; the fort has little by way of facilities.
  • A local guide is worth having to find Sita Sej, Koti Tirth and the Neelkanth approach.

Best time to visit

October to February is the season for Kalinjar, when the climb and the walking are comfortable and the view over the Bundelkhand plains is clear. The monsoon is green but makes the rock slippery. Summer is punishing on an exposed hilltop with little shade and is best avoided entirely.
