Jabalpur's best known excursion runs 25 km out of the city to the point where the Narmada cuts a gorge through walls of marble.

Of everything a visitor to Jabalpur can do in half a day, this is the one that gets suggested first. The Marble Rocks are 25 km from the city centre, along the banks of the Narmada, and the road out is short enough that the trip can be fitted around a working day or a train arrival. For a traveller based in the city rather than at the gorge, that proximity is the whole appeal: you leave Jabalpur after breakfast and you are back by afternoon.
What you go to see is a stretch of river running between high walls of limestone and magnesium rock. One point along the canyon, Bandar Kudni, is worth asking about by name: the walls close in so far there that monkeys are said to cross from one side to the other without difficulty. The area also has an archaeological record, as excavations at some of the ghats have turned up shells of dinosaur eggs. And the site has a film history too, having stood in as the location where Shah Rukh Khan courted Kareena Kapoor in Ashoka.
Jabalpur visitors also come out for the full moon. Seeing the rocks under bright moonlight is the version of the trip locals recommend, and it turns a day excursion into an evening one.
Large limestone and magnesium rock faces flank the Narmada along this stretch, and the river runs between them in a narrow channel. Seen from water level the scale of the walls is much clearer than it is from the road above.
This is the point where the canyon pinches in most tightly, close enough that monkeys are said to jump across. Ask for it by name, because it is easy to pass on a general visit.
Excavations at some of the ghats here have produced shells of dinosaur eggs, which gives the site an archaeological interest alongside the scenery.
A visit on a moonlit night is the version regulars from the city make a point of. The marble takes the light differently and the gorge reads quite unlike it does by day.
From Jabalpur this is a half day at minimum, and a short evening if you are going for the moonlight. Plan the timing rather than the route, which is straightforward.
October to March is when the drive out from Jabalpur is pleasant and the river is clear and settled. Within that window, the nights around the full moon are the ones city residents pick. The monsoon raises the river and boating is usually suspended, so the gorge can only be seen from above. April and May are hot enough that an early start is essential.
