A large reservoir on the edge of Khajuraho town, used for picnics and water activities rather than sightseeing.

Beni Sagar Dam has emerged as a picnic spot for tourists visiting Khajuraho, and is now one of the most visited places of its kind in the area. It lies within the outskirts of Khajuraho town, so it is the easiest break from the temples that does not involve a long drive.
The dam is created across the Khudar river and covers an area of 7.7 square kilometres, which leaves plenty of open water. Several water sports and activities are offered on it, and that, together with the space on the banks, is what brings people here.
Boating and other water activities are run on the open water, which at 7.7 square kilometres is large enough not to feel crowded. What is operating varies with the season and the water level, so it is worth asking at the gate rather than assuming.
The shoreline is the reason most families come: open space, water in view and somewhere to sit for a couple of hours. It is a straightforward outing rather than a sight, and late afternoon is when it is liveliest.
The dam is close enough to Khajuraho town to be reached quickly by auto or car, and works well as a late afternoon outing.
October to March is the comfortable season, and late afternoon into sunset is the pleasantest part of the day. Water levels are highest after the monsoon, which is also when the reservoir looks its best. The hot months make the open banks uncomfortable before evening.
