About Raneh Falls

Raneh Falls lies about 20 km from Khajuraho, where the Ken river runs through a canyon of crystalline granite roughly five kilometres long and around a hundred feet deep. The rock is the reason to come. It is pure crystalline granite in bands of pink, red and grey, scoured smooth by the river into curved walls and polished channels, with the colours changing as you move along the rim.

The falls themselves are seasonal. After the monsoon the river fills the canyon and water drops into it at several points through the surrounding wooded area; in the dry months the flow retreats to the deeper channel and the exposed rock becomes the main sight. Viewpoints are set along the rim, and the wooded ground above makes the site a long-standing picnic spot for visitors coming out from Khajuraho.

Along the canyon

The granite gorge

The core of the site is the canyon wall itself, banded pink, red and grey and worn into smooth curves by the river. Different stretches show different colours, so it is worth walking between viewpoints rather than stopping at the first.

The seasonal falls

Several falls drop into the canyon after the rains, from the main river channel and from streams in the wooded area nearby. By late in the dry season most have stopped and the rock is fully exposed.

The wooded rim

The ground above the canyon is lightly wooded and shaded, which is why the site has long been used as a picnic spot. It also makes the walk between viewpoints comfortable in the cooler months.

Planning your visit

Raneh is an easy half day from Khajuraho and pairs naturally with Panna National Park, since the approach runs the same way.

  • Allow about two hours on site to walk the viewpoints at an unhurried pace.
  • Stay behind the marked edges; the polished granite is slippery and the drop is sheer.
  • Combine with a Panna safari slot or with Pandava Falls on the same run.
  • Carry water and avoid the middle of the day in the hot months.

Best time to visit

Late August to October is when the falls are running and the canyon is at its most dramatic. November to February is the most comfortable for walking the rim, with water still in the channel. March to May shows the granite at its most exposed, which some visitors prefer for the colour and the rock forms, but the heat is serious by midday.

Raneh Falls - FAQs

Everything travellers ask us most often. Still unsure? Message us on WhatsApp and a real MP Holidays expert will reply.

01 How far is Raneh Falls from Khajuraho?
About 20 km, which makes it a straightforward half day trip.
02 Are the falls always flowing?
No. They are seasonal and strongest after the monsoon. In the dry months the water retreats to the main channel and the exposed granite becomes the main attraction.
03 What makes the canyon unusual?
It is cut through crystalline granite rather than sedimentary rock, and the walls carry bands of pink, red and grey over a stretch of about five kilometres.
04 How deep is the canyon?
Around a hundred feet.
05 Can you go down to the water?
Visitors are expected to stay on the marked rim viewpoints. The rock is polished smooth and the edges are dangerous.
06 Can Raneh Falls and Panna National Park be done together?
Yes, they are on the same side of Khajuraho and are commonly combined, usually with the safari slot fixing the shape of the day.
