Know about Shipra River of Ujjain

• The holy city of Ujjain is situated on its east bank. Every 12 years, the Sinhastha fair (Kumbh Mela) takes place on the city’s elaborate riverside ghats, as do yearly celebrations of the river goddess Kshipra. 
• There are hundreds of Hindu shrines along the banks of the river Shipra. Shipra is a perennial river.

• An ancient city situated on the eastern bank of the shipra River, Ujjain was the most prominent city on the Malwa plateau of central India for much of its history. 
• It emerged as the political centre of central India around 600 BCE. It was the capital of the ancient Avanti kingdom, one of the sixteen mahajanapadas.
