A museum of Indian classical music set in the ancestral home of Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan.

Sarod Ghar is a museum of music set up in the old ancestral house of the legendary Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan. It houses instruments belonging to the great Indian masters of past generations, together with an impressive collection of photographs and documents, so the exhibits are as much archive as display.
The institution is devoted to promoting Indian classical music, heritage and culture. Through this window to the past, music lovers can gain a better understanding of how classical music evolved, and a deeper perspective on the context in which the art exists today. In a city that produced Tansen, that is not an abstract claim.
The collection includes instruments played by Indian masters of earlier generations, displayed close enough to study the construction. For anyone who has only heard these instruments recorded, seeing the actual bodies, strings and frets changes how you listen.
Alongside the instruments is a substantial collection of photographs and papers. These are what turn the museum from a display of objects into a record of a musical lineage and the households it passed through.
The museum occupies Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan's own ancestral home, so the rooms are domestic in scale. It is a very different experience from a purpose-built gallery, and the setting is part of what is being shown.
Sarod Ghar is in Gwalior city and takes under an hour, so it slots easily into a half day of city sights.
The museum is indoors, so it works in any season and is a good choice on a hot or wet day. October to March remains the pleasantest time to be in Gwalior generally, and December, when the Tansen Music Festival is on, gives the visit extra point.
