A coloured granite canyon on the Ken river, twenty kilometres out of Khajuraho.

Twenty kilometres from Khajuraho, Raneh Falls are famous for the rock formations on the river Ken. The canyon is pure crystalline granite, about five kilometres long and roughly a hundred feet deep, and it is multihued: the rock runs through varying shades of pink, red and grey along its length.
Besides the canyon itself there are a number of seasonal waterfalls in the nearby wooded area, which is what makes the place a picnic spot as much as a geological one. How much water is falling depends entirely on the time of year.
The gorge is the main event: five kilometres of crystalline granite cut by the Ken, around a hundred feet deep, with bands of pink, red and grey in the rock faces. Viewpoints along the rim let you look straight down into it.
Several waterfalls appear in the wooded area nearby when there is water in the system, and dry back to bare rock when there is not. Late monsoon and the weeks after it are when they are actually flowing.
Raneh Falls is a short drive from Khajuraho and is usually combined with a half day out rather than a full one.
For water in the falls, the monsoon and the months just after it are the time to come. For comfortable walking along the rim, November to February is better. By late spring the seasonal falls are usually dry, though the coloured canyon is still worth the drive.
