About Queens Fort

Queen's Fort is a lovely building of the eighteenth century and was the residence of Ahalya Bai Holkar, one of the greatest queens India has seen. It functions between 7 am and 7 pm and stands as a living monument to her rather than as a ruin.

Set on the majestic banks of the Narmada, the fort is the hub of all activity in Maheshwar. It once served as the administrative quarters of the queen, and the palace displays her seat, various chhatris and her personal temple, all largely intact. A devotional song in her honour has been composed under the auspices of the Ahalyabai Trust. The premises also house a weavers' cooperative society, which keeps the town's handloom tradition alive inside the fort walls. Visiting it gives a close understanding of the greatest queen of the Holkar dynasty.

Inside the fort

The queen's seat and her personal temple

Ahilya Bai's seat is displayed in the palace, along with her own private temple. These are the parts of the fort that make the queen a specific person rather than a historical name, and they are what most visitors come for.

The chhatris

Various chhatris stand within the complex and are among its finest stonework. They are best seen in low morning or evening light, with the Narmada behind them.

The weavers' cooperative

A weavers' cooperative society operates within the fort premises, so the handloom tradition of Maheshwar is practised on the same ground that Ahilya Bai governed from. You can see the looms at work during working hours.

Planning your visit

The fort opens at 7 am and closes at 7 pm and sits directly above the ghats, so it combines naturally with the riverside.

  • Go early, between 7 and 9 am, for the ghats and the fort in good light and without crowds.
  • Footwear is removed at the queen's personal temple.
  • Visit the weavers' cooperative during working hours if you want to see the looms.
  • Allow an hour to an hour and a half for the fort and the river frontage.

Best time to visit

October to March is the best season at Maheshwar. Early morning is the single best time of day: the fort opens at 7 am, the river is calm, the ghats below are busiest with bathers and the light on the Narmada frontage is at its finest. Evenings before the 7 pm closing are the second choice.
