A pilgrim island town in the cradle of the Narmada
Omkareshwar lies on the sacred Mandhata Island, where the Narmada and Kaveri rivers meet around an island shaped like the holy syllable Om (ॐ). It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva — the most sacred Shiva shrines in Hindu tradition.
Pilgrims circumambulate the island on the 7-km parikrama path, with shrines, ashrams and ghats at every step. Twin shrines — Omkareshwar on the island and Mamleshwar on the mainland — are both worshipped as the Jyotirlinga.
