Forts, palaces and monuments that tell the story
🔍Orchha Fort is one of the most famous places to visit in Orchha. It lies on the banks of River Betwa in Orchha. The fort is built by Bundela Rudra Pratap Singh in the year of 16th century, which took many years for its completion. It comprises of many structures like forts, palaces, historical monuments, etc.
🔍Built by Raja Bir Singh Deo in the 17th century to commemorate the visit of Emperor Jehangir to Orchha. Its strong lines are counterbalanced by delicate chhatris and treillies work, the whole conveying an effect of extraordinary richness.
🔍Resembling a palace, this is the only temple in India where Lord Rama is worshipped as a king. The grand peach-tinted building with domes, was once the palace of queen Ganesh Kumari, the wife of king Madhukar Shah, the ruler of Orchha. It was known as Rani Mahal then. The queen was a devotee of Lord Rama and wanted his idol to be installed in her palace.
🔍Situated to the right of the quardrangle, this palace was built by Madhukar Shah, the deeply religious predecessor of Bir Singh Deo. The plain exteriors, crowned by Chharties, give way to interiors with exquisite murals, boldly colourful, on a variety of religious themes.
🔍It is one of the most important temples in Orchha. It is another beautiful temple which is dedicated to the Goddess of wealth Lakshmi and is built by Bir Singh Deo in the 16th century. Built during the rule of Raja Bir Singh Deo, the Lakshmi Narayan Temple is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth and prosperity). Its structure exemplifies a unique blend of temple and fort architecture. Built with lime mortar and bricks, the temple has cannon slots on its roof.
🔍There are fourteen 'Chatries' or memorials to the rulers of Orchha, grouped along the Kanchana Ghat of the river Betwa.
🔍This beautiful temple dominates the town of Orchha with its shikharas (spires) soaring into the sky. Built on a 4.5-m-high platform, a flight of stairs leads to the main temple. It is said that this is where an idol of Lord Rama was originally supposed to be enshrined. Failing to do so, king Madhukar, who was the then ruler of Orchha, decided to place an idol of Lord Vishnu here.
🔍It is built in the 17th century which attracts the visitors due to its large area and ruined structure. The ruins structure of haveli is perfect for the picture frames for photography enthusiasts. The large arch of entrance arch and ruins roofs are most of the attractive parts of the historical structure.
