George Castle stands in the depths of the Madhav National Park forest, and the reason to drive out to it is the view it gives across Sakhya Sagar Lake.
George Castle sits inside Madhav National Park, set among the forest rather than on its edge, which is what makes the approach part of the experience. The drive in goes through the park, and the building appears at the end of it on high ground.
What the castle is really for, from a visitor's point of view, is the outlook. From here you look out over Sakhya Sagar Lake and the forest around it, with water, treeline and sky laid out in one sweep. At dusk, with the light going down over the lake, it is the single best view in Shivpuri, and it is the hour almost everyone tries to be there for.
The lake opens out below the castle with forest running down to its edges. It is a wide, uninterrupted outlook, and the reason the drive through the park is worth making.
The last half hour of light is when the view is at its strongest, as the lake takes the colour of the sky and the forest flattens into silhouette.
The drive in runs through Madhav National Park, so the journey itself can turn up deer, birds and other park wildlife before you reach the building.
Because the castle is inside a national park, reaching it depends on park timings and on the gate being open, not just on your own schedule.
October to March is the season for Shivpuri, with clear air and comfortable afternoons inside the park. Within the day, aim for the late afternoon so you reach the castle with an hour of light left. The monsoon greens the forest but brings haze and difficult tracks, and the summer afternoons are hot.
