The fort at Jagdishpur in Bhojpur district, Bihar, home of Kunwar Singh, who led the fight against the East India Company in Bihar at the age of 80.

The great warrior of 1857 belonged to Jagdishpur, and his fort still stands there as a reminder of a son of the soil who fought for freedom until his last day. Kunwar Singh, who lived from 1777 to 26 April 1858, came from a royal Ujjainiya, or Panwar, Rajput house of Jagdishpur, now part of Bhojpur district in Bihar. He was a notable leader of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and the chief organiser of the fight against the British in Bihar, leading a select band of armed soldiers against troops under the command of the British East India Company at the age of 80.
His last battle was fought on 23 April 1858 near Jagdishpur, where the East India Company troops were completely routed. Injured, he fought on 22 and 23 April and, with the help of his army, drove the British force away, brought down the Union Jack from Jagdishpur Fort and hoisted his own flag. He returned to his palace on 23 April 1858 and died three days later, on 26 April.
The fort is the surviving physical link to the events of April 1858. It is the structure from which Kunwar Singh brought down the Union Jack and raised his own flag after driving off the East India Company troops, so the flag point is the part of the site that most visitors come for.
The last battle was fought near Jagdishpur on 23 April 1858, and ended in the complete rout of the company troops. Seeing the fort together with the surrounding ground gives a clearer sense of the action than the fort alone.
Kunwar Singh belonged to a royal Ujjainiya, or Panwar, Rajput house of Jagdishpur. The fort is a family seat as much as a military site, and local accounts of the house are worth asking about while you are there.
This is an open historical site rather than a managed museum, so set expectations accordingly.
Late April carries the anniversaries: the last battle on 23 April 1858 and Kunwar Singh's death on 26 April. Visitors who want the commemorative atmosphere time their trip to those dates, while anyone who prefers a quiet walk around the fort should pick a cooler, ordinary day and go early.
