An 11th century fort on a rocky height above Jabalpur, built by Madan Shah and used as a watchtower in his mother's reign.
Madan Mahal Fort was built in the 11th century by Madan Shah, son of the Gond ruler Rani Durgavati, and it served as a watchtower during the queen's reign. It stands at a height of 500 metres, dominating the skyline and giving a wide view over the town and the countryside around it.
The fort was built to watch over the surrounding country, and standing on it makes the choice of site obvious. The town and the open land beyond it are both laid out below.
The fort sits on the same rocky hill that holds the Balancing Rocks at its base, so the approach is as much about the geology as the masonry.
The fort is a short trip from Jabalpur and shares its hill with the Balancing Rocks, which most visitors see on the same outing.
Go in the cooler hours. The climb is exposed and the reward is the view, which needs clear light rather than a particular season.
