🔍The heart of Amarkantak: the exact birthplace of the holy Narmada river. The white temple complex surrounds the sacred kund from which the river emerges, with shrines to Narmada Mata and a constant rhythm of aartis and pilgrims.
🔍A cluster of 10th-11th century stone temples built by the Kalachuri kings, right behind the Narmada kund. Their carved shikharas are among the finest surviving examples of medieval central-Indian temple architecture.
🔍The Narmada’s first great leap: a roughly 100 ft waterfall named after sage Kapil, who is believed to have meditated here. A short forest walk leads to viewpoints that are stunning in and just after the monsoon.
🔍A little downstream of Kapil Dhara, the Narmada froths so white here that the fall looks like pouring milk, which is exactly what its name means. Reached by a scenic walk along the river gorge.
🔍One of India’s most unusual temples: the entire building is a walk-in, three-dimensional Sri Yantra, built on the principles of sacred geometry. Its sculpted gateway face is now an icon of Amarkantak.
🔍On the eastern rim of the plateau lies the origin of the Son river, the Narmada’s "brother" that flows the opposite way. A quiet shrine marks the spot, with lovely sunrise views over the valley below.
🔍A grand modern Jain temple rising over the town, famous for its monumental Ashtadhatu idol of Bhagwan Adinath and its intricately carved pink stonework, still being embellished by artisans today.
🔍A tranquil ashram set amid Sal forests on the parikrama route. Pilgrims stop here for meditation and satsang, and its ornate gateway is one of the most photographed corners of Amarkantak.
